The hotel, built between 1885 and 1890, was a showpiece for Midland Railway Companys northern operations, and is of particular architectural interest, retaining some of the finest Victorian features including the Victorian Passageway with its floor to ceiling Burmantoff tiles. The hotel features 90 bedrooms fully equipped with ensuite facilities, satellite TV, iron and trouser press in each room, as well as facilities such as free wireless Internet connection and on site free car park for residents.
