Ireland Travels

Hi All!

I went on a surfing holiday last year in August. I bet you're all thinking Hawaii, California.....Australia? Way off. Think green. Think Guinness. Yeah you guessed it, Ireland. It's not that well known for surfing and you always find it's never really busy; which in surfing terms that's perfect.

I arrived in Belfast where an good friend of mine lives and spent a night there. Belfast is a brillaint city with lots of things to do. I was only there one night there which basically included going to the suburb pubs, and hitting the nightlife later on. We went to a club called 'Thompsons' and Zane Lowe was there headlining. Ended up being an awesome night, and I ended up falling in love with Ireland-before the surfing had even begun!

The next day we got up pretty early, and after a cooked breakfast got on our way to Bundoran.  Bundoran is an old sea side town in Southern Ireland in County Donegal, on the Atlantic Coastline. I had never been to southern Ireland before, and the drive was absolutely stunning. It was all country roads and considering this, it took quite a long time to get there. We stayed right on the coast in a holiday house that we rented for the week. I can't quite remember how much it was, but it was a decent price. We shared the house between six of us for the week.

As soon as we got there we looked straight over the cliffs over the sea. Waves were immense. 'The Peak' at Bundoran is one of the best waves in Europe. Throughout the week we only missed one day due to no swell. We surfed in a number of different places to after getting to know the guys down at the Surf Shop. They give out top class advice on surf conditions, and knowing your ability tell you why they think you should go to a certain place. Some of the guys rented boards, wetsuits, and took lessons from here, but the advice you get for free!

We felt very privileged to be invited along to watch the local professional surfer ride 'tow in waves'. I've never seen such big waves, and waves that were so far out off the coast. They use jet ski's to tow the surfers into the wave for added speed. I wouldn't want to fall off on one of those......

Bundoran is quite a lively place at heart, and there are plenty of bars in the centre. We visited a really old bar in the centre called 'Brennan's' that has won the best pint of Guinness in Ireland 5 years running (this is what our surfer man told us). No word of a lie though, it truly was the best pint of Guiness I'd ever had...I used to hate the stuff until I had that glorious pint!

Other than surfing, Bundoran offers a lot of walking (particularly the coast line), golf, horseriding, kayaking & canoeing, fishing, charter vessels (for whalewatching/wildlife, and fishing), a high ropes course, and climbing. Quite an active holiday destination for famalies, couples, or a young persons holiday!
