Jamaica holidays transport you to a unique island in the Caribbean which, because of its history, has influences from many cultures around the world. Originally inhabited by South American indians and invaded by the Spanish at the end of the fifteenth century. One hundred and fifty years later it was invaded by the British and so began several hundred years of British rule. It became a very productive island but this was sadly at the expense of thousands of slaves transported from Africa. After the abolition of slavery, workers came from East India and the Far East, so mixing cultures further. In wasn't until 1962 that it gained independence.
