Berlin is an imposing city with buildings from its long, and oft times troubled, history. Medieval remains, the city walls and Marienkirke dating from the eleventh century are found near Alexanderplatz. The Brandenberg Gate was, in the late sixteenth century, the main gate into the city, but since the fall of the Wall it has become the symbol of reunification. The Reichstag building, the seat of government, has been restored and renovated several times since it was built, the latest being in the nineteen nineties. Many visitors climb the cuppola to enjoy superb panoramic views. The remains of The Wall are a reminder of Berlin's unhappy past. The East Side Gallery, one kilometre of wall, is covered with paintings and graffiti. Those with an interest in German history with find many museums including the Jewish Museum, and the house of the Wansee Conference where the implementation of the “final solution” was discussed.

Moving into post reunification times, the city has seen massive renewal and Potsdamer Platz is a vibrant centre with shops, bars, clubs and cinemas.

Berlin offers a wide range of accommodation which caters for all budgets, and its restaurants cater for all tastes. The city is a shopaholics dream, and its nightlife has something for everyone.
