Krakow Holidays
Krakow city breaks take you to Poland's premier tourist destination. It is easy to see why this is so. It is an ideal break for those with an interest in history as the town is like an open air museum. Its vast medieval square is bordered by fourteenth century town houses, the Cloth Hall and the church of St. Mary's, a beautiful building with twin spires. Whether an historian or not, you are sure to be charmed by its narrow cobbled streets opening into delightful squares, its many churches, museums and galleries, its river and its gardens. You can explore the city on foot, by horse and carriage, or by vintage trams. The River Vistula runs through Krakow and pleasure boats travel upstream through beautiful countryside to Bielany and Tyniec.
There is plenty to do and see during your Krakow city break. The medieval square in Stare Miasto, said to be the largest in Europe, has a programme of activities throughout the year. With markets, concerts, street performers and festival celebrations, there is always a lively atmosphere. Wawel Castle is another important attraction. Once a royal palace it now houses museums. South of the palace is Kazimierz, the Jewish Quarter which began life in 1335 and is home to several synagogues. Most of the Jews of Krakow were sent to the ghetto in Podgorze during the war and then to labour camps where very few survived.
Krakow hotels and apartments provide a range of accommodation catering for most budgets and its restaurants satisfy most tastes. Krakow nightlife has something for all moods and tastes.
While visiting Krakow, most visitors take the opportunity to make a pilgrimage to Auschwitz, to remember and pay their respects to the victims of the Holocaust.
