Travel Tips
Nature lovers who enjoy walking would be more than happy with a trip to the Plitvice Lakes national Park which is also a World Heritage Site. Located in the Karst area of Central Croatia, it is famous for its lakes that are connected and flow, one down into the other, over naturally forming dams. The waters of the lakes vary considerably in colour depending on minerals and the angle of sunlight. There is a height difference of five hundred feet from the highest to the lowest. Apart from the rivers, lakes and waterfalls, the area is home to the brown bear, wolves, wild cat and lynx and a large number of birds and bats.
The long coastline of Croatia brings beach lovers by their hundreds of thousands. If you are looking for a sandy beach you will have to choose carefully as the majority of the country's beaches are pebbles and shingle. The upside to this is that the waters are incredibly clear and ideal for snorkelling and diving. There are of course some wonderful sandy beaches, many of which are found on the islands. One of the best is Saharun beach on the island of Dugi Otok. With aquamarine shallow waters, it is a firm favourite with young families. Dubrovnik's Uvala Lapad beachis another favourite, but being close to the city centre, it can become crowded. The island of Korcula is well-endowed with sand with Vela Przina beach as one of the most popular. Many of the beaches offer water sports for the more active holidaymaker.
The country has several UNESCO world heritage sites. Split, in Dalmatia, houses the Palace of Diocletian. Built in the fourth century, this vast structure, lying in the very centre of the town, is more like a fortress than a palace and is the world's most complete example of Roman remains. The historic city of Dubrovnik is an extremely popular holiday destination. Ideal as a short city break, it attracts large numbers of couples. It is in the top ten of the best preserved medieval cities in the world. Its protective walls run for over a mile around the city. With frequent turrets and towers, it cannot fail to impress. Located in the south of the country, it also has the warmest and the driest weather.
Accommodation reaches very high standards and service is excellent. In terms of menu and price, restaurants, bars and bistros, are wide-ranging and really do cater for all.
