Malta holidays take you to an historic island, south of Sicily in the Mediterranean Sea. Although an archipelago, only three of the largest islands, Malta, Gozo and Comino are habitable. Formerly part of the Commonwealth, it became a republic in 1974. There are two official languages, Maltese and English. It has a benevolent climate, with a long, hot summer season making it a very popular holiday destination. Archaeological evidence shows that there were settlers on the island since 5000 years BC. Owing to its strategic position as a naval base, Malta has been invaded by a succession of powers from the Phoenicians to the British, and evidence of this is seen in its ancient ruins and in the architecture of the principal town. With a rich culture, a beautiful landscape, stunning city architecture, remote villages, pleasant seaside resorts and a plethora of recreational activities, you'll never have a dull moment.

Malta has many strings to its bow and it is easy to see why it attracts almost half a million British tourists each year. It is a year round destination as winters are mild and during the summer there is dawn to dusk sunshine. The sea temperature from June to November lies pleasantly in the low twenties. A small island, only nine miles long and thirteen wide, it offers a wealth of recreational activities and tourist attractions. If you decide to hire a car and explore the island, you'll be pleased to find that driving is conveniently on the left. If you have young children and want to be close to a sandy beach, you must choose your resort with care. Although the island has very many bays and inlets, the majority of them are rocky. The best sandy beaches are Mellieha Bay, Golden Bay and the aptly named Paradise Bay. On Gozo, Ramla l Hamra is considered the best. A wide range of water sports are available.

If you are looking for a romantic city break, a trip to Valletta, the island capital and a World Heritage City, would more than suffice. This baroque town has buildings surviving from the sixteenth century. It is to be the European Capital of Culture in 2018.

The impact of tourism on the island's economy is enormous so Malta ensures that standards of accommodation are high, and that the experience of visitors is a positive one. The warmth and helpfulness of the islanders can not be faulted. Its many restaurants cater for all, and the more conservative palate can always find familiar food. Nightlife varies according to the resort, but generally there are venues to suit every mood from party to romantic. With many shops and markets, you'll find it easy to spend your euros. The island is proud of its lace industry, its delicate filigree jewellery and its colourful pottery.
